Nearly 120 000 sq m of land of the botanical garden in the Bulgarian coastal town of Balchik will be transformed into an attractive tourism site. Two thirds of the garden will be covered with vines that once were present on its territory, Sofia's chief architect Petar Dikov said as quoted by Dnevnik daily. The project for the botanic garden's development has been initiated in 2004 by the Culture Ministry but fell through because it was not approved by Balchik municipal council. The cabinet decided at the end of August 2007 to share the park's management between Sofia University Kliment Ohridski and the Culture Ministry. The project envisions the construction of 59 two-floor houses, three pools, three tennis courses, an amphitheatre and a winery. Dikov said that currently the northwestern part of the park is deserted and in bad condition. The territory of the botanic garden in Balchik is protected and the palace on its territory was declared a monument of culture. That is why no over-development threatens the garden, Dikov said. The property will not face too many constructions as happened at the south Black Sea coast. No company has announced its interest in the plot yet.
